Brown Bear Bag

Look at the cute bag Jenni made from the Brown Bear, Brown Bear panel leftovers!

After I made the throw pillow (pictured in an earlier post), I was left with some usable scraps. Usable indeed! Jenni put on her thinking cap and whipped up this awesome creation! I love the little button accents on the handles.

This bag is going to make a special little boy very happy! It already is full of Anamalz...beautiful organic maple wood toys!

Simple Enough

Yep, I'm a sucker for a new quilt pattern. An even bigger sucker when the pattern is super simple. Simple enough to make at my kitchen table, simple enough to make with a little boy playing nearby, simple enough that I don't have to rely on much brain power...you get the idea.

I saw this pattern when I was browsing through some of my favorite on-line quilt stores this afternoon. I can imagine this quilt made with a variety of different fabrics. Lots of ideas pop in my mommy-drained brain! I've been wanting to try working with some Asian-inspired fabrics, and this quilt pattern just might be an option for me.

I have looked at lots of Asian-inspired fabrics lately, but I'm not convinced what to buy. I'm not sure I like the typical red and black fabrics. They look very traditional and lovely, but it's not what I envision for my house. I did see some muted golds, blues and tans that were beautiful too. I'm just not sure (those who know me best won't be surprised to hear me say that)! I'll be *forced* to look at more fabric until I find what I'm looking for! Any ideas? Send them my way!

Here's a glimpse at some of my Brown Bear, Brown Bear items!

The throw pillow was made out of a panel from the Brown Bear, Brown Bear collection. Jenni longarmed whimsical loops all over the panel. Then, I whipped up a pillow cover once she was finished! The finished pillow is 24 inches square. I think it turned out adorable! The pillow adds a finishing touch to the twin bedding set since it features every animal in the popular Eric Carle book and the "What do you see?" saying.

The quilt itself is made up of "Tiny Turning Twenty" blocks and solid squares of the animals! It is a twin-sized quilt. (Although I didn't take a picture of the entire quilt...the inner border is the red tonal animals and the outer border is the large animals on white fabric. Maybe I can take a better picture at a later date!)

Jenni longarmed loops throughout the quilt. Then she longarmed words such as ribbet, quack, bark, brown bear, I love you, etc. for a personal touch!

You see, this quilt is for an *extra special* little someone! I'm sure he will love it! (It already has Nick's *seal of approval*!)

9-Patch Progress

Yesterday I took out my beloved Patisserie charm packs and started making some 9-patch blocks for a quilt top.

This fabric is so soft and pretty...I adore it! I'm not much of a "pink person", but I couldn't help myself with this fabric collection. An added bonus of this collection is the French countryside map pieces!

I'm working on a variation of a quilt pattern called "Dressed to the Nines" that was featured in an American Patchwork & Quilting magazine (October 2007, Issue 88). Kelly Alford, the designer of the pattern, has a simple philosophy on quilting and design.

Maybe too close and too real...

This is my little guy's first official photograph, of who else? Me.

Anyone who knows me, knows that I hate. I mean HATE, LOATHE, DESPISE all pictures of myself. I really hate having my picture taken. (I sometimes even run from the camera.) My eyes are usually closed. I can always find a flaw. I think my head is extra large and round. And, don't get me started on the wrinkles. The sun damage. The realness of it all.

Well, Nicholas got very close to me and said..."Smile Mommy!" I think he captured me looking very everyday, very regular, very real. I, as usual, don't like the picture of myself, but I do like how he captured how I looked at him. I can see past some of the things I hate about my looks and see love in my eyes. That I like.

I guess imperfections are a part of life, right? It's kind of like how I always want every seam to match and be perfect on my quilt tops. And, I usually have at least one seam that is off a little bit. It's a good reminder for me that life isn't perfect.

I'm lucky, my family loves my imperfect quilts and the imperfect me. How perfectly wonderful.

I just love this little gem of a light! The OttLite® is amazing!

I have had a love affair with this light when I am binding a quilt late a night! I really don't know what I did without it. (Other than pull the table lamp close to me and tilt the lamp shade for more light to see what I am sewing.) I read some other reviews on this lamp, but I haven't experienced any problems with my lamp. Other reviews mentioned that the lamp doesn't stay in position once it's been adjusted. Some reviewers mentioned that it wasn't "sturdy". I wouldn't recommend lugging it all over the place, but I don't think of it as fragile by any means. I'm thrilled with my lamp!

Sewing Spaces

I'm so longing for my *own space* to sew and create. For now, it's my kitchen table.

Someday, I hope to have my own room devoted to all of my sewing and quilting!

For now, the kitchen table seems to work great for me. I can be a part of the family's activities while I sew. I can keep an eye on dinner in the oven, and watch the snow falling from my kitchen window. (Yes, we've had a little snow already!!!)

Now, if I just had Jenni's awesome sewing space...THAT would be heaven!

I can imagine these tags on all sorts of packages, gifts, jars, bundles of fabric, etc. Put a pretty little tag on a special bottle of bubble bath or lotion, and you won't even need to gift wrap it!

It's been such a busy summer...where does time go? I recently got back from a lovely vacation in South Dakota. We did the typical tourist things...Mt. Rushmore, camping, Rushmore Caves, Storybook Island, and more! Oh, and I did get to stop at a charming quilt store, the Thimble Cottage, just for me! It was an entire building chock full of quilting goodies!

American Jane's Happy Campers for Moda is such a great new fabric collection! The collection is wonderfully nostalgic with fun plaids, florals, and picnic scenes. Little boys and girls, puppies, campers, tents, fishing poles, and the great outdoors...I love it! Yes, I'm crushing on this new line of fabric!

I think my favorite is the Camp Basic fabric with the alphabet running between two different patterns. I can't wait to buy some of this fabric for myself!

Do you have some things you always do as a quilter?

I started thinking about this and started a list of things that I always seem to do.

Here goes...

1. Always use high-quality quilting fabrics for your quilting projects.

My favorite fabric brand is Moda, but there are many to choose from! Maybe too many...fabricholics you know who you are! :o)

2. Always read and understand the directions for a quilting project before starting it.

This is good advice, even for the expert quilter!

3. Always close the blade of your rotary cutter after each cut.

A rotary blade is so sharp and dangerous. Since I am a mother of a young boy, I also never use my rotary cutter in his presence and store it away from his little fingers in a very safe spot.

4. With every new project, always replace the needle in your sewing machine.

Don't sew with a dull needle!

Paris Street Market

The Paris Street Market on the 4th of July was awesome! The crowd was huge, parking was scarce, but the vendors were prepared! This was my first time at this particular market, and I wasn't disappointed. I ended up going by myself, but I didn't mind. I do my best shopping when I'm by myself.

I saw several things I wanted to buy. I especially liked the antique scales. Although they were unique, they weren't quite what I had envisioned finding for myself. I really, really, truly want an antique candy scale like the one my mother owned. As a little girl, I can remember her filling the scale with old-fashioned ribbon candy at Christmas. (With a house full of 6 kids and several grandchildren, I'm sure the candy didn't last long!) I am hoping to find a scale that is close to the one I remember my mother having. My sisters better watch out, I know they each have one! I could bring an extra suitcase next time I visit...

Independence Day

Today I am busy with preparations for our little 4th of July celebration...I'm making potato salad, preparing frozen treats, and putting together a few red, white & blue decorations. Of course, there will be sparklers and fun activities planned too!

The 4th of July just got a little sweeter...

Yes, the 4th of July is an American tradition...but there is a Paris Street Market to go to! It is being held at Aspen Grove Shopping Market in Littleton, CO this Saturday! I can't wait!

A Paris Street Market is an outdoor, open-air market in the true Parisian flea market style. There will be antiques, architectural pieces, primitives, unusual artifacts, eclectic home and garden accessories, retro collectibles, vintage clothing, jewelry, fresh and dried flowers, French bread, fresh pastries, delicious coffee and more!! Over 120 exhibitors from throughout the Rocky Mountain region will be offering very cool stuff.

Now if my 3 sisters could go with me, the day would be perfect!

Retail Therapy

Everyone knows I love to shop. To me it's retail therapy...I get a rush when I find the perfect item. I love the hunt of shopping and the whole process, really. All of my to-do lists have some sort of task that involves shopping. Buying groceries, shopping for a gift, adding something to our home, buying plants for around the home, you get the idea. Maybe it's just what women do? (Although I know some women who hate, even loathe, shopping for anything. *GASP*, right???) Maybe it's in my genetic makeup to be a shopper. Who knows! All I know is that I was born to shop. And, if I find a bargain, my day is complete!

On that note, I must say I love shopping for beautiful fabrics. I like to shop on-line and in stores. Sometimes I find the very best deals on-line. Other times, I like to look at fabric in person and make my selections in quilt stores. However, the level of customer service and selection can vary from store to store. I frequent 3 quilt stores in my area and they all seem to have their own personality.

One store, Golden Quilt Co., has a great selection of batiks and bright fabrics. There is a sprinkling of Moda collections, reproductions, and novelty prints too. The store is small, but well-organized, interesting to look at, and carries a great selection of notions and patterns. But, when I go there I feel like I don't exist. I am like the invisible shopper, only being helped when I beckon them to the cutting table. They never ask what I am making or how else they could help me. Is this kind of customer service wrong? Am I expecting too much? Is that giving me space to look and make my own decisions? Do I just not look like a "quilter" and I don't deserve their attention? All I know is that it makes me feel like I entered someones home without being invited and I don't like it. Which, by the way, makes me feel a little sad because it is a great little shop. So, this store is not the first stop for my fabric needs.

Another store I shop at, Fabric Expressions, is in Littleton, CO and the selection is wonderful! They carry a large selection of Moda Collections, charm packs, and jelly rolls. They also carry batiks, reproduction fabrics, novelty prints, flannels, homespuns, and just about anything else you are looking for. There are store samples neatly hung all around the store. (However they are sometimes just quilt tops, not finished quilts.) You can find lots of notions and patterns. This store has a personality all it's own too. It's quiet. You feel like you are in a library at times, looking for just the right book, I mean bolt of fabric. But...the staff knows me by name and are almost always friendly and helpful. I like this store. I really like it. I just wished it oozed a little bit more personality or life. Maybe a little music or better conversation? I can't put my finger on it...

Another store in my area is Holly's Quilt Cabin. Now this store is a bit of a drive for me. It's in Centennial, CO. But, without fail they always, I mean always, have new stuff to look at and ways to feed my need for retail therapy. New quilt samples, new fabric, new patterns, new kits, new notions, oh my! When they buy a fabric collection, they buy almost the entire collection, not just a few bolts. They have regular sales and offer 20% off the end of the bolt every day, not just on select days of the month. THIS store has a pulse. The staff is chatty and fun to talk to. My 4 year old will tolerate this store because they have a huge jar of candy at the register. I love everything about this store....BUT ONE THING. They rip fabric. They don't use rotary cutters to make neat and precise cuts. So, sometimes I tend to buy an extra quarter yard "just in case". I cringe at the thought of snipping the beautiful fabric and then ripping away! But, the selection and the staff courtesy is worth the drive for me.

With all of that said...what makes the perfect quilt store? Is it the selection? The staff? The location? WHAT is it? I guess I will have to continue finding new quilt stores to shop at to determine the answer... and I'm not a bit disappointed!

Feeling Grateful...

Just jotting down a few things that I'm grateful for today...

1. My husband and son. They tell me they love me every day.

2. My 3 sisters...I think won the "Sister Lottery". They are simply the best. Each one of my sisters has a unique way of making me feel special and loved.

3. Patience. It's not always easy, but good things are worth waiting for. God has a plan for me, and patience is helping me realize the power He has in my life.

4. The kindness of strangers. Lately I have met a lot of people that seem genuinely kind and helpful.

5. The quiet time at the end of the day...spent reading or relaxing. I look forward to that time every night.

My Sweet Find

Look at my sweet find!

I've been wanting this beehive cake pan for a very long time....and today I went to Williams Sonoma and bought it!

I was busy as a bee this morning while my little guy was at summer camp. Shopping, running errands, etc. When I have a morning to myself I try to make every minute count. (Retail therapy counts, right? Oh, good!)

Now I should get busy making a quilt with my "Bees Knees" fabric by Maywood Studios!
The vintage 1940's look of florals, stripes, and geometrics is so fresh and fun! I just need to decide on the perfect pattern. I really adore the entire collection, but especially the pieces with the daisies and bumblebees.

Beyond the Bed

How do you decorate your home with quilts?

Think beyond the bed...and let your imagination take over. We only have so many beds to be covered in our home, so what is a quilter to do?

Think about hanging a quilt for a creative new "headboard" or creating seat cushions for a fresh new look in your kitchen.

I have also heard of quilters repurposing a baby's changing table to display nicely folded quilts, all stacked on top of each other. The changing table could be painted to match your decor, or distressed for an aged look.

I love the look of these cushions...

I don't speak French, but I do speak LOVELY, which is exactly what this festive garland by French General is!

I would love to make a festive garland for my son's birthday or for the holidays. A 4th of July garland would be incredibly fun! I have a lot of scraps from leftover quilts so this project might cost me next to nothing! Now, THAT is speaking my language! (Can I get a high-five from my frugal and fun friends?)

Ch-ch-ch Changes

Right now I am in the midst of making some decorating changes. My little guy, soon to be "big boy", is getting his room redecorated. I've decided on a transportation theme, so to speak. I have a vision in my head what it will look like. Pulling it together, well, that's going to be my own journey. Sure, if I had unlimited funds and the time to shop til I drop...but, I don't.

I am envisioning neutral-colored walls...a bone-white color. (I know it sounds boring to most people or to decorating divas, but I like *fresh* colored walls. Nothing too dark or trendy for me.) Then, the color scheme for his bedding is going to be navy blue, muted red tones, and tan. In my mind I see an interesting, vintage-style, red airplane hanging from the ceiling (kind of like what is in the picture). I am also picturing the use of maps as wall art and a vintage globe or two on his dresser or desk. I would love to find a vintage suitcase for added decor...or imaginary trips. I've been perusing websites for inspiration too. I am going for a look that allows my big boy to grow into his room over time.

I'm in the process of buying a few new pieces and adding some accessories as I find them. I have purchased one item already. It's a Compass Clock from Pottery Barn Kids. It's adorable and goes along with the whole "theme" in my head.

Hopefully his room will all come together nicely in the next few months! Suggestions are welcomed!

I love this product by Fairfield! I've been using this liquid wash with all of my quilts and I'm impressed, people! If you are going to buy high-quality fabrics and spend many hours making a wonderful quilt...why wouldn't you pay attention to the care and cleaning of your creation? Not any detergent will do, right?

My son's quilts get washed more than any other quilts in my house. He sleeps with his quilts, plays on his quilts, and cuddles up to watch a movie with his quilts. I'm impressed that after many washings, his quilts still look bright and vibrant! I haven't noticed any fading or bleeding of the fabric colors. Thumbs up from this mom! (Of course, I always wash in cold water on a delicate cycle as well.)

Just keep sewing, just keep sewing! (I must be watching too much Finding Nemo...just keep swimming, just keep swimming!) Seriously, I wish I could just keep sewing. I have so many interruptions lately, so many family activities planned, so much on my to-do list...the list is never-ending. But, I'm vowing today to carve out some "me" time in the near future and just keep sewing.

Botanic Gardens Trip

What a great Memorial Day weekend! We went to the Denver Botanic Gardens for a long, relaxing walk through the gardens. (Plus, the little guy had energy to burn! He loved the Koi fish ponds and winding trails.) We went early this morning to avoid the rain that was predicted for most of the mountains and foothills.

All of the beautiful flowers gave me some great ideas for my own garden.

Plus, I'm now in the mood to pull out some of my favorite floral fabrics and start sewing! Maybe I'll create something with my Moda Simplicity stash or my Moda Paris Flea Market stash....decisions, decisions!

I'm feeling a bit creative today with the impending snow in our Colorado forecast. I love crafting, sewing, and quilting when the weather outside is less than ideal. I love the idea of my sewing machine humming along while my little Rudy-dog is curled up in a soft circle near me and my little guy is busy coloring away in his sketch pad at the kitchen table. Next, fill the house with some relaxing music by Josh Groban and the smell of freshly baked brownies and we are SET! (Now, if the laundry fairy could make a visit and possibly Paula Deen to make a delicious dinner for this evening, we would really be set! A girl can dream!)

I am leading a Quilt Ministry at my local church. We are making 30 quilts for an orphange in Mexico. Dr Greg Woods and Commerce Communinity Church in West Des Moines are partnering in this endeavor.

We have the majority of the funds to purchase quality fabrics and supplies. We are missing the hands to sew the quilt tops!!!

Eric Carle, the children's book author, has opened a museum in MA called The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art. I just found this website and am blown away at all of the incredibly fun stuff!

As you may know, I *love* all things that are Eric Carle-related! Books, fabric, toys, stationary, you name it, I love it!

The dishes and flatware are adorable, as are the Brown Bear, Brown Bear square stoneware banks. The Brown Bear, Brown Bear ceramic ornaments are simply sweet. The posters are really cool and colorful. They would be perfect to decorate the walls of a little one's bedroom.

1st Day of Spring Planting

March 21 is Dad's birthday. He would have been 77 years old on Saturday. Dad was so proud to have been born on the first full day of Spring. In honor of his birthday, my son and I planted some seeds. Planting seeds in his honor seemed like a great way to celebrate his life and to remember him. We went to the garden center after preschool and looked at all of the available seeds. My son decided that rainbow-colored flowers were best, and we picked up a seed packet of Wildflower Butterfly Mix. It's a lovely assortment of Cosmos, Chinese Forget-Me-Nots (How appropriate!), Marigolds, Zinnias, Blanket Flower, Sweet William, Shasta Daisies, Gloriosa Daisies, and Foxglove.

In about 7-14 days we should have some signs of growth in our mini-greenhouse. I'm excited to see what happens!

National Quilting Day is March 21

The theme for National Quilting Day this year is “Welcome Home”. The NQA writes: “As our country looks forward to 2009 with a new president and new hope for our country, we at The National Quilting Association thought it would be appropriate this year, to devote National Quilting Day, to the home. The housing market is in decline and foreclosures are on the rise, with greater numbers of homeless families to follow. We would like to encourage our members, guilds, and sponsors to join together and give their effort and energy to those who may be struggling for warmth and comfort.”

What are you doing for National Quilting Day? What a lovely day for a random act of kindness...whether it involves quilting or not! I'm going to try to find a way to brighten someone's day this weekend. The world needs more kindness... so why not?

Oh, Snippet! How I love this 1940's inspired fabric collection by American Jane for Moda Fabrics! The soft, muted primary colors deserve to be made into something fun and flirty.

Think of the cute kitchen aprons that could be made with any of the fabrics from the collection! The daisies, polka dots, and paper dolls would be lovely made into something for a little girl. My mind races thinking of magical things could be made for a little one's play kitchen....place mats, tablecloths, napkins, quilted potholders, softly gathered curtains. Lemon Kisses

Lemon Kisses is a dessert made with a cookie crust and a yummy lemon topping.

These tasty little bars are perfect for a girls luncheon, baby shower, bridal shower, family gathering, or just because.

Enjoy!

Ingredients:
2 cups flour
1/2 cup powdered sugar
2 sticks unsalted butter
2 cups sugar
1 tablespoon flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
4 eggs, well beaten
1 heaping tablespoon grated lemon rind
1/4 cup lemon juice

Additional powdered sugar for sprinkling on the cooled dessert bars

Preparation:

Sift the flour and the powdered sugar together. Cut in butter until well blended. Press mixture over the bottom of a 9 by 13 by 2-inch pan. Bake about 25 minutes at 300° until very lightly browned. Be careful not to over bake. Combine the remaining ingredients and evenly spread the mixture on top of the baked crust. Bake at 350° for 25 to 30 minutes. Sprinkle with a generous helping of powdered sugar when completely cool.

Makes about 12 servings.

Joanna Figueroa of Fig Tree Quilts has an incredible website and blog that I recently discovered. I could lose myself for hours in this website....there is so much to look at! She describes her site as "creating fresh vintage style for your home". Her enviable style is original, uncomplicated, and sophisticated at the same time.

I have a *fabric crush* on her latest fabric line, Patisserie. I happen to think this is her best fabric collection yet. However, Jenni has a stash of fabric from the Dandelion Girl collection that is just divine. I can't wait to see what she creates with it! The fabric should look perfect in her home with the dark wooden floors, antique touches carefully placed in every room, and *fresh* colored walls. (We'll see if Ernie gives the fabric his "stamp of approval" at a later date. Something tells me he will love it!)

Spring Decor

Spring is almost here, and I can't wait! I love what Spring symbolizes....new beginnings, renewal of life, and hope for the future. Tulips and crocus begin to bloom, bees venture out of their hives, and butterflies decorate the sky. It truly is a beautiful time. It gives me hope to improve my own life and make some changes that I've been dreaming of.

Spring also inspires me to clean and decorate. I would love to have an endless supply of money to make my home *just so*. Since I don't have that luxury, I can dream through window shopping and inspiring photographs. One website that I love (Williams-Sonoma) has some gorgeous new spring decor with their Springtime Nest Bell Jars. For centuries, European and American gardeners used bell-shaped glass covers to protect their plants and new seedlings from harsh and cold weather. I think they are gorgeous. And maybe, just maybe, I could find a frugal solution and copy this idea in my own home. Check out the link below for details on how to order these beautiful bell jars.

Cotton Way has a new pattern for sale that uses one Moda Honey Bun and a little bit of yardage. (Honey Buns are a pre-cut item, similar to a jelly roll, but 1.5" strips instead of 2.5" strips.) The pattern is called Fresh Apple Tart and I love it! The pattern is simple and fresh, and I simply adore it!

The finished quilt is relatively small (40" square) so it would make a fun baby quilt! Imagine using the finished quilt as a table decoration and then giving it to the expectant mother at the end of the party! What new mommy wouldn't be thrilled with a sweet baby quilt?

I can't wait to buy this new pattern! It's on my long list of "wants"!

Okay, I admit it, I'm addicted to beautiful fabrics. I love to buy whatever makes my heart sing! The fabric doesn't have to complement a room in my home. It just has to grab me for whatever reason....the colors might remind me of a place or time, or someone I know would love the fabric and whatever creation would transpire from it, or just because. That's right, just because.

My latest quilt crush is on Patisserie by Fig Tree Quilts for Moda Fabrics. The colors, oh la la... butterscotch, frangelico, pear tart, angel food, sugar berry, butter cream, frosting and marzipan. How delicious!

I absolutely love the fabric pieces with the maps of the French Countryside. Lately anything with a map on it has caught my attention. Hence, the fabric crush!

Tango Anyone?

A new quilt is loaded on Taloulabelle's long arm. It's a bright and scrappy version of Tile Tango by Terry Atkinson. The quilter did a fabulous job picking out the perfect mix of brights against a white background. This is definitely a stash buster pattern!

I chose white thread for this creation.

The stitching designs is one of my favorites and the first all over design that I mastered. I call it "Ernie McCrackin' Chestnuts". I charge 1 1/2 cents per square inch to stitch this design on your quilt.

Mary, from Des Moines, Iowa, is the quilter and loves to use brights for her quilts.

"I Spy" a Quilt on Taloulabelle's Long Arm!

The lastest creation to pass under my needle and thread is a fun "I Spy" quilt!! It's a small lap size with a unique setting layout. The blocks appear to be staggered within the setting.

Laura, the quilter from Des Moines, chose yellow background fabric for the sashing. The blocks are a variety of juvenile prints that will provide hours of "spying" new things. The backing fabric is a print with fish, bugs, globes, flowers ... anything you can think of is there for spying fun.

I chose an all over loop and star design using bright yellow thread. I thought the star would add an added item to search for! I charge 1 1/2 cents per square inch to stitch this design on your quilt

I met Laura when I was working at a quilt shop in Des Moines. She showed me the ropes as a new employee. It's been a pleasure to work on Laura's quilts and an honor to call her my friend.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar and a Very Happy Boy!

Here are a few pictures of a quilt I made for my son, the very happy little boy! I had the good fortune of attending a quilt retreat in October 2008 so he wasn't able to see me making his quilt. The retreat was hosted by the owner of Adel Quilting & Dry Goods.

The fabric I used for the quilt top is from Andover's The Very Hungry Caterpillar line. The pattern I used is called Bits n Pieces from a Colorado-based company, Mountainpeek Creations (http://www.mountainpeekcreations.com/).

Jenni "worked her magic" and long armed a leaf design* to go with the theme of the Eric Carle book The Very Hungry Caterpillar. I'm thrilled with the results!

That same weekend, my sister Jenni and I also worked on a body pillow using a fabric panel. Jenni had the fabric quilted and ready to go when I arrived at her house. We just had to trim the panel to fit the pillow and add the backing fabric for a pillow case! It turned out really cute! It was a great way to use a fabric panel.

Now, my little guy has a fun quilt set to use on movie night!

Turning 20 with Faded Memories

A new quilt is loaded on Taloulabelle's long arm. I love the process of selecting the thread color and deciding the stitching design. It's a challenge to determine what is going to compliment the quilt and the quilter. I want my work to blend with the work of the quilter and to bring out a new facet of the design.

This pattern is Turning 20! It is an amazingly simple pattern. It's fun to piece from a variety of fat quarters. Whether you chose a line of fabric or allow yourself the freedom to mix and match fabrics, the quilt will be fabulous. This is a terrific pattern to raid your stash with. It's easily enlarged by adding borders or increasing the number of fat quarters; try 30 or 42!

Check out the other patterns being offered in the Turning 20 series. You will not be disappointed.

You Mapquest your way to new quilt stores.
You love new fabric lines and can't wait to purchase a few fat quarters to add to your stash.
You know of a few great on-line fabric stores and you visit the sites on a regular basis.
Your fabric stash is neatly organized in a few bins. You have charm packs, fat quarters, and some yardage for borders and binding.

Potential for a Fat Quarter Frenzy

You know the quickest routes to all the quilt stores in your area!
New fabric lines mean an instant "shop hop" to pick up at least a dozen fat quarters of each line.
On-line fabric stores are bookmarked on your computer, you visit the sites a few times a week, and you receive email updates on new fabric lines and sales.

One Fish Two Fish, Red Fish Blue Fish

A new quilt is loaded on Taloulabelle's long arm. I keep thinking of Dr. Seuss ... One Fish Two Fish, Red Fish Blue fish ... Pieced Fish Quilted Fish!

The pattern is employing a technqiue of cutting strip sets into triangles and pairing with the background to form FISH!!! The finished blocks are set on point with sashing strips.

Mary chose a wonderful assortment of colorful prints to form the fish and set them with a sea blue background. Her border and backing is a fun pattern with fish and sharks. How perfectly perfect!

I decided my quilting design needed to make the fish appear to be swimming under water. It's a swirl pattern that mimics ocean waves. I selected a light blue thread to blend with the blue background yet provide a subtle contrast.

I charge 1 1/2 cents per square inch to stitch this design on your quilt!

Mary is a dear friend and a faithful customer. She has pieced quilts for all of her grandchildren. Now that they each have been blessed with a quilt, she's sharing her gifts and talents with friends. The fish quilt belongs to a little boy that dines at the same restaurant as Mary and her husband Del.

I'm sure this little boy is going to be enchanted with the quilt!

What's on Taloulabelle's Long Arm?

Hello!! I’m starting a new feature entitled “What’s on Taloulabelle's long arm?” I’d like to share what I’m working on with you. I’ll provide a brief description of the quilt, fabric, pattern, quilter and my quilting design.

The first quilt I’m featuring is my own! It seems that my quilts are continually shifted to the bottom of the quilt stack. I’m spoiling myself and enjoying every stitch!

The pattern is called “Spice Market” and is featured in the April, 2007 issue of American Patchwork and Quilting magazine from Better Homes and Garden. I used the Shangri La line of fabric from Moda for my quilt. This is an easy and fun quilt to piece! Give it a try! It's fun for every skill level.

The quilting design I chose is one of my favorite all over designs. It’s a fun, flirty flower design. I chose a light blue thread to finish this quilt. It blends very nicely with the blue tonal fabrics and the floral designs. It’s just the right contrast for the darker pieces of the fabric line.

I charge 1½ cents per square inch to stitch this design on your quilt.

Here's some pictures of my latest quilt project using a Moda Portobello Market jelly roll. I like this pattern because it uses the entire jelly roll, with virtually no waste! The quilt finishes at 70" x 70". I think it might make a great bed topper!

The bonus part of this project is that I purchased the jelly roll at http://www.fatquartershop.com/ when they were having their "Countdown to Christmas" sale. I got the jelly roll for $15! (This is one of my favorite on-line sites for fabric. They always offer great customer service, fast shipping, and regular sales!)

I just have the borders left to do. I purchased the light blue paisley for the outer border and the backing. I didn't buy the fabric for the inner border yet (I don't know why...). I'm wondering about just doing an outer border, or if I do an inner border, purchasing the red tonal for the inner border.

I've been working on this quilt mostly at night, when Nicholas is in bed. (I have the fewest interruptions late at night.) It's funny, Nicholas always says "Don't hurt your fingers!" every time he sees me get my sewing machine out. Sometimes (okay, a lot of the time) I catch my fingers on sharp pins when quilting and always say OUCH! I guess he has noticed that I'm accident prone!

Yesterday I was shopping around Etsy.com (If you haven't heard of Etsy before it's a website for people to buy and sell all things handmade... AWESOME place you should definitely check it out) and I came across this person who makes the cutest Sock Monkeys I have ever seen. She uses bright colored socks, and they look absolutely adorable!! When she finally gets one for sale back on her site I will definitely have to purchase one!! Here are some pictures of past monkeys!!

Shop Hop!!!

On Saturday Jenni, Jill, Little Jenny (Jill's Daughter) and I, Abby (Jenni's Daughter) went quilt shop hopping!! We had a great time, and ended up getting a bunch of new fabric!!

We started out at the Ankeny Sewing Center, and we didn't buy anything here, but they are having a huge consolidation sale with everything AT LEAST 15% off. Fabric is 25% off!!

We then made the short walk over to Quilter's Cupboard in Ankeny (Ankeny Sewing Center and Quilter's Cupboard are in the same strip mall). Jill and Little Jenny picked up some super cute fabrics while there.

After raiding the fabric at those two stores we made the trip up to Quilting Connection in Ames, Iowa. We all purchased fabric here as they have an AMAZING selection. Here I was able to find some "Very Hungry Caterpillar" fabric. I purchased it to make a baby quilt for a dear friend of mine who is due any day. Thank goodness I have already finished it!! See a post of it as soon as Jenni finishes long arming it! Jill purchased some fat quarters, and Jenni bought some really pretty batik fabric that was teal and brown with coffee cups all over it. At this point she has no idea what she is going to do with it. I guess we will see.

Then, we drove another 20 miles to Prairie Rose Quilts in Jewell, Iowa. I must say I was not impressed by this store, and the owner was quite rude to all four of us!! Needless to say I will not be back.

That rounded out our day of quilt shopping of course we hit a few other stores that were not fabric related but overall it was a GREAT day!! We only wish that Amy could have joined us on our adventure!! Maybe next time!!

Quilt Retreat

What a great time at the Ladies of the Lake Quilt Retreat! The retreat was held at Lake Panorama near Panora, Iowa! Each of the girls finished a couple quilts and really enjoyed spending time together.

Jenni sewed together a bright and fun Charming Trails quilt top using Moda "Wee Play" fabric. (The Charming Trails pattern is by Whistlepig Creek Productions in Arvada, CO. http://www.wpcreek.com/. ) She also pieced together another quilt top using "Peace on Earth" fabric by Moda. She used a new pattern by Open Gate called Cranberry Garland that utilizes charm packs and jelly rolls. She is planning on creating a custom border. It should be interesting to see the final result!http://www.opengatequilts.com/catalog/c12_p2.html

Jill used some "Jitterbug" fabric in muted shades of green, pink, cream, and brown for a Cheaper by the Dozen quilt top (Legacy pattern). http://www.makingalegacy.com/
Jill also used some Moda "Garden Inspiration" charm packs to stitch up a Charming Trails quilt top. It turned out really nice!

Lisa sewed together a quilt using leftover Moda "Fresh Air" scraps. She also sewed an adorable holiday quilt using the fun "Five and Dime" pattern by All Washed Up. Lisa had time to work on a Charming Trails quilt top using Moda "Apron Strings" reproduction fabrics too.

Amy worked on a Moda University quilt top using Moda "Faded Memories" fabric. She also sewed together another quilt top using Andover's "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" fabric. The pattern she used was Bits and Pieces by Mountainpeek Creations, a Colorado-based design company. http://www.mountainpeekcreations.com/index.asp Jenni also helped Amy make a large throw pillow cover (using a custom quilted fabric panel) to match the Hungry Caterpillar quilt. Nicholas will love the Hungry Caterpillar quilt and pillow set!

Jack-O-Lantern Juice!

Here's a great recipe for a Halloween brew---Jack-O-Lantern Juice!

Ingredients
1 quart pineapple juice, chilled
1 quart orange juice, chilled
1 1/2 quarts cranberry cocktail juice, chilled
2 liters ginger ale, chilled
2 cups of your favorite fruity vodka--orange-flavored vodka is yummy! (optional)
Ice cubes or an ice ring made of frozen distilled water with gummy worms or bugs

Directions

In a large punch bowl combine pineapple, orange, cranberry juices and ginger ale.

Add ice or ice ring.

Serve chilled.

Circus Tent

Jenni made Nicholas a circus tent for his playroom. It was a present for his 4th birthday. The main fabric is an adorable circus design by Nancy Wolff. I just love her novelty prints for children! The tent turned out super cute. The tent pattern can be found in the book Covered With Love by Becky Goldsmith and Linda Jenkins.

Custom Quilting Templates

For all of the machine quilters out there… this is for you!

Michele Pettorini of Custom Quilt Templates (CQT) has created a product called a tabbed template that will aid you in creating those long arm patterns you never thought were possible! The templates are amazingly easy to master.

Below are just a few of the designs you can make with the help of the CQT tabbed template!

They are really easy to use, and below is a step by step guide on how to use the CQT tabbed template: (Please note the block dot is your hopping foot.)

She took a class of Michele’s and immediately after the class called me to rave about the class and the templates. She said once you get the hang of it and get into the “quilting groove” it takes no time at all to finish a quit with these!

Chocolate Peanut Butter Ribbon Dessert

Prep Time:15 min

Total Time:4 hr 15 min
Makes:12 servings

12 NUTTER BUTTER Peanut Butter Sandwich Cookies, divided
2 Tbsp. butter, melted
1 pkg. (8 oz.) PHILADELPHIA Cream Cheese, softened
1/2 cup creamy peanut butter
1/2 cup sugar
2 tsp. vanilla
1 tub (12 oz.) COOL WHIP Whipped Topping, thawed, divided
2 squares BAKER'S Semi-Sweet Chocolate, melted

CRUSH 8 of the cookies in resealable plastic bag with rolling pin. Mix cookie crumbs and butter. Press onto bottom of foil-lined 9x5-inch loaf pan.

MIX cream cheese, peanut butter, sugar and vanilla with electric mixer on medium speed until well blended. Gently stir in 3 cups of the whipped topping. Spoon 1/2 cup of the cream cheese mixture into small bowl. Stir in melted chocolate until well blended; set aside. Spoon half of the remaining cream cheese mixture over crust. Top evenly with chocolate mixture; cover with remaining cream cheese mixture.

FREEZE 4 hours or overnight until firm. Invert onto plate. Remove foil, then re-invert onto serving platter so that crumb layer is on bottom. Coarsely break the remaining 4 cookies. Top dessert with remaining whipping topping and cookies.

Quilting Weekend

I decided to spend the weekend with my mother(Jenni) and I THOUGHT I would be quilting all weekend, but I was WRONG. We sent the weekend laughing, rearranging the house, and having a GREAT time.

We couldn't stop laughing about this commerical! Baby Come Back...

Needless to say I had a great weekend!! Hope everyone got more quilting done than I did!

Makes:10 servings

1 can (20 oz.) crushed pineapple in juice, undrained
1 pkg. (4-serving size) JELL-O Vanilla Flavor Fat Free Sugar Free Instant Reduced Calorie Pudding & Pie Filling
1 cup thawed COOL WHIP LITE or COOL WHIP Sugar Free Whipped Topping
1 pkg. (10 oz.) round angel food cake
10 fresh strawberries

MIX pineapple and dry pudding mix in medium bowl. Gently stir in whipped topping.

CUT cake horizontally into three layers. Place bottom cake layer, cut-side up, on serving plate; top with one-third of the pudding mixture. Repeat layers two times.

REFRIGERATE at least 1 hour. Top with berries just before serving. Store leftovers in refrigerator.

George, Daphne, & Sloan

This is Mr. George, he was my husband and my first dog! He is the sweetest guy ever. I couldn't ask for a better dog! His favorite thing to do is sleep on a pillow that Jenni helped me make!

The pillow is made from a table runner pattern called Orange Peel, and Moda's Fall Back in Time fabric.

This is Sloan he is my 1 1/2 year old Labradoodle that I foster with a Golden Retriever rescued called RAGOM (Retrieve A Golden of Minnesota) http://www.ragom.org/ He is the such a sweet boy. We call him our goldfish because he forgets everything in three seconds. I think he might have ADHD. He loves when you call him Sloany Bologna Goldfishy Alpaca. You might be wondering... Alpaca??? When you hold his ears above his head he looks like an Alpaca.

His favorite thing to do is lay in front of our oven while we are cooking... I think he likes it because it is warm.

Ms. Daphne is our baby. She is also 1 1/2 years old, but she acts like a little baby. Daphne is also a Golden Retriever but she only weighs 35lbs vs. George's whopping 85lbs. Her favorite thing to do is chew on EVERYTHING!

George, Daphne & Sloan love sleeping on quilts. Jenni made George his first quilt when he was 3 months old, and still to this day he sleeps on his quilt!

Gertie & Ernie

I would like to introduce Ms. Taloulabelle A.K.A. Gertie, Gert, Gertrude Elizabeth, Bert, Bertie... the list could go on forever. Taloulabelle Design Co. is named after Ms. Gertie. Jenni always calls Gertie by Little Ms. Taloulabelle and one day we were trying to name our new business and Taloulabelle Design Co. just stuck!

Here is a picture of Gertie posing on a quilt pieced and long armed by Jenni Ackerman. The pattern is called Charmed, and the fabric is Peas & Carrots by Moda designed by Sara Tuttle.

Jenni entered this quilt in the Iowa State Fair 2008 and took 2nd Place. It was entered as a last minute quilt!! Great Job Jenni!

This is Ernie; he is a very photogenic!! He absolutely loves having his picture taken; if you pose him he will stay that way until you have taken a picture of it. The quilt the he is "posing" on is pieced and long armed by Jenni Ackerman.

I have decided to create a blog about everything creative!!

On our blog you will see anything from new lines of fabric that have come out, free patterns, new samples we have created and long arm quilting done by Jenni Krohn! Basically you will see a little bit of everything!

My name is Abby and I live in Ankeny, Iowa and have three four legged hairy babies!! George, Daphne, and Sloan. George(2 yr.) and Daphne(1 1/2 yr.) are Golden Retrievers, and Sloan(1 1/2 yr.) is a Labradoole. I am married to a wonderful man named Jeremy and he supports all my crazy hobbies whatever they may be. I am a photographer and graphic designer and I just LOVE every minute of it! My mother is Jenni (the long arm quilter) and she got me exposed to quilting at a very young age! I think my favorite thing about quilting is the fabric and all the bright colors. Amy Bulter is my favorite fabric designer!! She uses such bright colors, and bold prints that just screams ABBY!!!

Jenni lives in Redfield, Iowa and has two of her own four legged hair babies Gertie and Ernie! They are named after Seasame Street's Bert & Ernie! They are both Mini Schnauzers and they may be getting older, but they will always be 2 years old in my mind!

Jenni have been quilting for as long as I can remember, and within the last three years started long arm quilting. Her work is absolutely amazing.
